Django Unchained: A Review

Kerry Washingto as "Broomhilda" www.tvrage.com

Django Unchained was not the movie I expected—it was much better! It is a damsel in distress, slave-western movie starring Jamie Fox (Django) and the very beautiful Kerry Washington (Broomhilda von Shaft). Kerry’s role as the wife of Django truly expressed what many black women have gone through in those times. It shows that yes—black women did get whipped just like the black men were whipped and not only that she was also considered property and a sex object. However, through the character Dr. King Shultz played by Christopher Waltz not all saw black women in such light.  But he was a metaphor of a type of man who actually admired her softness and beauty, as well as recognizing her vulnerability. Broomhilda is a damsel in distress from a German opera. In Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino keenly uses this as a figure for all black women of that era, they were all beautiful damsels in need of saving.

Why does it take a talented director such as Tarantino (who wrote and directed it) to make such a film showing black women in that light? This was the kind of movie I and perhaps many others were/are looking for. I would love for other black filmmakers to take a hint to the success of this movie. Right now Tarantino wins my heart on this one. For those women who want to support truthful images of black women, this is one I would put my money on. Please send a grateful letter to Quentin T.

The movie is dramatic with humorous overtones. Other actors in the movie were Leonardo DiCaprio (Calvin Candie) and Samuel L. Jackson (Stephen). They have also put on their performances which made you wanna hate them!  I give this movie TWO thumbs up!

Check it out.
